Leadership In the Community
Written by Julie Shuber
Julie Shuber (The Future Is Mine co-secretary) and Sidney Bergman (The Future Is Mine vice president) co-hosted the Leadership In the Community Event on April 10, 2025. The purpose of the event was to educate students on different qualities of leadership and how to adapt in a leadership position. The event was separated into two parts: a presentation from Melissa Crookston and a panel discussion with various leaders from the area. Melissa Crookston is a community engagement leader from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, and students had the pleasure of hearing her talk about the different qualities of being a leader. She also spoke about how student leaders can branch out in their communities. After a short break with snacks provided by the student council, a panel discussion was held with Mr. Sutherland, Mr. Demaro, Dr. Larcinese, Mr. Filapose, and Melissa Crookston. The panel discussion consisted of a series of questions asked by Julie and Sidney.
After the event took place, they ended the day with a presentation for juniors about how to complete college applications.
Drowsy Driving
Written by Madison Murphy
On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Sidney Bergman organized a presentation that taught students the dangers of drowsy driving. She was joined by State Trooper Broadwater who informed students about different kinds of impaired driving. Trooper Broadwater presented a slideshow that showed the consequences of when you drive when you’re impaired. Sidney shared the tragic story of Glenn Porter. Glenn was a young man who tragically died in a drowsy driving accident not long after graduating from the police academy in Charleroi, PA to follow in his father’s footsteps. We thank Sidney and Trooper Broadwater for coming to talk to us and teaching us about the dangers of drowsy driving.
