This program is managed by two teams. The British Team, led by Kevin Walsh (York) is funded by AHRC. Co-investigators are Alistair Pike (Southampton) and David Orton (York). Florence Mocci (Centre Camille Jullian, CCJ, UMR 7299) leads the French team (A*Midex-funded). Pierre Magniez (Laboratoire Méditerranéen de Préhistoire Europe Afrique, LAMPEA, UMR 7269 ) is co-investigator.
Kevin Walsh will deal with landscape archaeology and human-environment interactions in the Alps. Florence Mocci will work on the assessment of Alpine archaeological evidence for pastoralism in the Alps. Alistair Pike will oversee the isotope research, while David Orton and Pierre Magniez will advise on the faunal analyses.
Two AHRC Post Doctoral Researchers have been funded by the project. The first postdoctoral researcher is Juliette Knockaert (York) who has responsibility for the isotopic analyses and the meta-analysis of the zooarchaeological data (2018-2021). The post-doctoral researcher responsible for the sedimentary aDNA analysis is Katharina Dulias (York). Katharina has expertise in both sedimentary aDNA analysis and archaeo- and palaeogenetics of human populations.
Two Assistant Researchers are funded by A*Midex. Dianne Unsain (Centre Camille Jullian, CCJ, UMR 7299) is responsible for zooarchaeological studies of certain sites from the Southern French Alps. Janet Battentier (Centre Camille Jullian, CCJ, UMR 7299) is specialised in pastoral archaeology and scientific mediation.
Juliette Knockaert has joined the Centre Camille Jullian team as a researcher (2021-2022). Her contract is founded by A*Midex foundation.
International collaborators include Charline Giguet-Covex (EDYTEM, CNRS), who oversees work on Alpine lakes and the analyses of pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, sediments (physical and chemical properties) and sedimentary aDNA. Sylvain Burri (TRACES, CNRS) is an expert in medieval agricultural practices and will oversee archival work. Delphine Isoardi (Centre Camille Jullian, UMR 7299) and Florence Mocci will undertake an assessment of archaeological remains to characterise the range of archaeological built structures and artefacts (Iron Age to roman pastoralism). David Garcia Casas (Postdoctoral Researcher. Incipit - CSIC) will explore human mobility between archaeological sites in the two sides of western Alps. They use GIS to model possible pathways related to transhumant systems. Alexia Lattard (Centre Camille Jullian) will review anthropological/thanatological evidence associated with our archaeological assemblages. Raphaël Golosetti (Université Paris-Sorbonne, Orient et Méditerranée UMR 8167) and Franck Suméra (Ministère de la Culture, CCJ UMR 7299) are both archaeologists and responsible for archaeological settlements included in the program. Lionel Roux (Centre Camille Jullian) is the photographer in charge of the photo coverage.
Alongside this work, a working group comprising Roxanne Cesarini, David Garcia Casas, Delphine Isoardi, Alexia Lattard, Florence Mocci, Dianne Unsain, and Kevin Walsh has been established to undertake the GIS analysis which aims to develop the archaeological database and will carry out spatial analyses of the different archaeological data.
Students (Master and PhD Thesis) come from Aix Marseille University. Roxanne Cesarini is PhD student (LA3M UMR 7298 / Centre Camille Jullian UMR 7299). Louison Pupunat is in Master 1 (Centre Camille Jullian UMR 7299). M. Kernin will take part in zooarchaeological studies for the medieval contexts of the Lower Alps. Roxanne Cesarini will, with Florence Mocci and Delphine Isoardi, conduct archaeological surveys to identify and characterise built structures in the Alps. She will focus on medieval settlements. She will also work alongside David Garcia Casas on human mobility and GIS. Louison Pupunat is in charge of the zooarchaeological analysses of several protohistoric and antique settlements.
