Regression is the process of determining relationships between variables. In general, a "model" is an equation that relates independent and dependent variables i.e. a relationship between the value set in the experiement and the values measured. 

A regression can be carried out by plotting data graphically and determining a 'best fit' through the data.
It allows one variable to be predicted, or explained, in terms of others.
