At the YMCA of Central Ohio, it is important to have the proper tools to identify cause driven candidates with the right skills and knowledge to best serve the communities we are engaged in. It is also a top priority to ensure the safety of our participants by accessing the risk of each potential candidate during the interview process. Below, please find the mandatory steps every hiring manager is expected to follow to ensure a thorough, fair, and equitable hiring process.
Select your interview team: The Hiring Manager should select who helps conduct the interview with you. In order to minimize impression and personality bias it is mandated that all interviews have a minimum of two staff during each interview.
Pick your questions: All hiring managers are required to use the Interview Template to prepare the questions your team will use for the interview. This template should be completely filled out, as it will be uploaded to the employee documents in Kronos. There is a minimum of 7 questions required for each of the interview. Please note that we require every interview to have risk based questions to ensure we are vetting candidates early for any indications of red flag behaviors. You can find questions and red flag responses here.
Please make sure to review the list of illegal questions NOT to ask during an interview. This will ensure we are complying to interview best practices.
Follow Up: After completing the interview the YMCA of Central Ohio requires each hiring manager to follow up with each candidate within 3-5 businesses to notify them of next steps. This may include letting the candidate know we will not be continuing with them in the process, starting a reference check, or inviting the candidate to a second round interview. The interview process is often people’s first impression of the organization and by not informing those of the next step you could possibly lose a quality candidate, or even hinder our ability to hire that candidate for another position.
Checkster Reference Check Process
Once you have gathered the necessary information to make a hiring decision, the hiring manager must initiate a reference check using Checkster. All references must be completed before extending an offer of employment.
A complete Checkster report requires:
3 professional references
1 personal reference
To ensure a sufficient number of responses, candidates will be asked to provide:
4 professional references
2 personal references
If you have any questions, refer to the Checkster FAQ. Once all references are completed, the final report must be uploaded to the employee’s documents upon hire.
Once the checkster is completed and you have thoroughly reviewed the reference answers you can extend and offer to the candidate. Below are examples of letters hiring managers can use.
