Wonder by R.J. Palacio tells the story of Auggie, a tough, sweet 10-year-old boy, who was born with distorted facial features and a "craniofacial difference" caused by an anomaly in his DNA. Palacio tells NPR's Michele Norris that the book was inspired by a real-life encounter with her own kids six years ago.
The book starts and ends in the first person point of view, told by the main character Auggie, a ten year old boy. Throughout the book, the point of view changes and is told through other perspectives (through the eyes of his sister and kids at the school). “Wonder” is the kind of movie that should be shown to young and old as a life lesson about how to deal with people who appear to be different. It has a wonderful message about tolerance, acceptance, understanding and respect.
My opinion on this book was it was pretty good. I liked how Auggie went out of his comfort zone and expressed his feelings, and he wasn't so shy anymore and he went to school without wearing a helmet on his head.
I would rate this book 3 stars, I think it is only 3 because it was easy to read and follow along but it wasn't the best book I have ever read. He is so strong - coping with operations and bullies; stronger than all the others put together. This book shows other people doing good and bad. It is called Wonder because it makes you wonder – if you were him, or them. ... Please read this book for August or to change your own life.
