The Experience
Co-op is a course offered to grade 11 and 12 students in all subject areas. Courses completed throughout the semester can be linked to co-op experiences. For example, chemistry can be linked to a placement in pharmacy. These experiences assist students in exploring and preparing for future careers and in making a successful transition to post secondary education, apprenticeship or the workplace.
There are THREE types of co-op programs offered at St. Robert CHS. Listed below are more details of the Two, Three and Four credit Co-op programs.
All placements can be facilitated for a 4 credit co-op student.
Some placements such as technical trades and Reserves MUST be a 4 credit co-op.
The expectation is that students complete 440hrs for the entire course.
Student are at placement for the entire day.
Students need to arrange their own transportation.
Not all placement can be facilitated for a 2 credit co-op student.
Most technical trades can not be facilitated by a 2 credit option.
The expectation is that students complete 220 hours for the entire course.
Student are in school for periods 1 and 2 then leave for their co-op placement.
Students need to arrange their own transportation.
Most, but not all placement can facilitate 3 credit co-op student.
Some technical trades can be faciliated by a 3 credit co-op option. ( Please see Co-op Dept)
The expecation is that students complete 330 hours for the entire course.
Student are in school for ONLY period 1 and then leave for their co-op placement.
Students need to arrange their own transportation.
Once they have chosen a program, students can pick a career that they are interested in pursuing. Students will then be assigned a placement that is related to their career of choice. Examples of placements include:
Students will complete certifications before their placements to ensure that workplace safety standards are met. Examples of certifications include:
Students enrolled in the co-op program can choose to take part in additional programs that support cooperative education. These programs include:
Dual Credit - college courses that are offered to high school students
OYAP
Central Placements
SHSM
By the end of co-op, students will have obtained:
Two, Three or Four high school credits (depending on which program the student is enrolled in)
Certifications, such as First Aid, WHMIS 2015, Customer Service, CPR, Food Safety, Electrical Safety and much more!!!
Workplace experience and transferable skills, such as Academic skills, Problem solving, Personal Management skills and Teamwork skills.
Additional achievements depending on whether the student decides to take part in additional programs.
I.e. College credit, SHSM certification, OYAP certification.
