"The visual arts are an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression, communication and understanding.
They range from traditional forms embedded in local and wider communities, societies and cultures, to the varied and divergent practices associated with new, emerging and contemporary forms of visual language. They may have sociopolitical impact as well as ritual, spiritual, decorative and functional value; they can be persuasive and subversive in some instances, enlightening and uplifting in others. We celebrate the visual arts not only in the way we create images and objects, but also in the way we appreciate, enjoy, respect and respond to the practices of art-making by others from around the world. Theories and practices in visual arts are dynamic and ever-changing, and connect many areas of knowledge and human experience through individual and collaborative exploration, creative production and critical interpretation.
The IB Diploma Programme visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. The course is designed for students who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.
Supporting the International Baccalaureate mission statement and learner profile, the course encourages students to actively explore the visual arts within and across a variety of local, regional, national, international and intercultural contexts. Through inquiry, investigation, reflection and creative application, visual arts students develop an appreciation for the expressive and aesthetic diversity in the world around them, becoming critically informed makers and consumers of visual culture." ~ ibo.org
The IB Visual Arts program is designed to enable students in studio work and investigation. Investigative workbooks are used to develop their knowledge about visual arts, and should allow for individual exploration. Students will be provided with opportunities to develop different approaches to the practices of visual arts. They are encouraged to develop their own perspectives and approaches: students’ interests and aesthetic preferences should play a prominent role in determining individual courses of study. Contextual and critical study of past, present-day and emerging practice should be integrated into studio work.
Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to:
• develop the skills and techniques of investigation—both visual and written
• relate art to its cultural and historical contexts
• explore art concepts
• explore art elements
• develop and use the processes of art criticism and analysis
• develop confidence and expertise in the use of various media
• extend their knowledge of design
• share their work with an audience through displays and exhibitions or presentations
• extend individual investigation to inform practical work
• make connections between ideas and practice—both their own and others’.

NEWS FROM DRAMA
September begins another year of new challenges and opportunities for St Robert Drama. As the students return to the classroom a feeling of normalcy has begun. Live performances are inspiring students to explore their creativity together as a class and individually. Students are taking advantage of the in class space and applying new skills currently used in today's industry. Through the use of studio lighting, green screens and iPads students are able to transport their presentations to magical places around the globe. Our new mirror installation allows students to self critique and take their performances to new heights.
As COVID restrictions prevent us from gathering together for live performances, our students are working toward producing an online Drama production that we can share with our school community. Please check our website for updates.
The Drama team is happy to introduce the St Robert Roadies Audio Visual Club. The club will focus on creating online content for the school community, supporting our many school initiatives.
Our drama students continue to be inspiring, creative and confident, showing that anything is possible when we come together.
Once a drama student, always a drama student!
We are thrilled to say that the music program is looking a little more normal this year, not as vibrant as usual, but slowly and surely we will someday get back to our concerts, festivals, competitions and trips. Students are able to play in class with all safety measures put in place.
We have been running after school rehearsals for Junior, Intermediate and Senior bands, string orchestra, jazz bands and choir. Although we will not be having our traditional Christmas concert and reception, we will be recording some Christmas music to showcase on the STR youtube channel.
Some students will be performing in the lobby for Remembrance Day and throughout the month of December to celebrate the Christmas season. We are optimistic that participation in festivals and competitions will be an option in the Spring and that we will be able to have a Spring Concert.
For the past three years the St. Robert music program has expanded with the Music and Computers course for grades 10 and 11. This course teaches students the fundamentals of music, using technology as the instrument, and allowing them to materialize the theory they learn into their own creative compositions. The aim of the course is to engage students in the creative process while developing their theoretical, technical, and intellectual understanding of music. Students will, for example, examine music from films and video games, learning the theory behind what makes them sound, and feel, the way they do, and then create their own music to accompany those visuals. In addition to the technical skills gained, the students also get to understand and better appreciate the psychology behind the music that accompanies these media, and how to use music to enhance and further develop their own personal/individual voice and communication skills.
We owe a generous debt of gratitude to Scotiabank as they were the major funder for the initial purchase of the equipment for the Music and Computer lab. They still remain huge supporters and advocates of this program, most recently donating 16 laptops as well as other computer equipment, in order to facilitate a needed expansion to 30 workstations.
Mrs. Meloche's grade 9 students explored the new Gelli Prints and Grade 12s got outside to draw En Plein Air. The Gelli Prints are on display now in our main lobby.
Mrs. Brockest Grade 9 class explored ceramics with an early Christmas themed project. Students designed their trees in their sketchbooks and then brought them to life using a slab and pinch pot technique. Check them out in our in our lobby starting mid November.
Botanical Gelli Prints from Mrs. Brockest's Grade 9 Students are currently on display in our main lobby and in the second floor Art wing.
The Grade 10 Art Students started off the semester working on their Ceramic Mug designs. Student used either a pinch pot or slab technique to create their designs.
Grade 12 Photography Student Work: A collections of image from their Still Life, Self Portrait, Landscape and Night Photography units.
With longer classes we are able to take advantage of our beautiful surroundings and get outside. The photography students went out to practice their camera angles, while the Grade 9s had the opportunity to spend the class outside working on their Shadow Art.
