Theory of Knowledge

Knowing about Knowing

TOK is a course about critical thinking and inquiring into the process of knowing, rather than about learning a specific body of knowledge. It is a core element which all Diploma Programme students undertake and to which all schools are required to devote at least 100 hours of class time. TOK and the Diploma Programme subjects should support each other in the sense that they reference each other and share some common goals. The TOK course examines how we know what we claim to know. It does this by encouraging students to analyse knowledge claims and explore knowledge questions.

TOK IA Exhibition

During the final week of school, senior students in the IB Theory of Knowledge course shared their final projects with grade 9 and 10 IB students as well as administrators. This culminating project is an exhibition in which students are asked to choose three objects and reflect on the main question: How does Theory of Knowledge manifest in the world around us? The students did a remarkable job and truly showed their skill and all they’ve learned with the younger members of the IB program. Their work uncovered the complexities of knowledge through a careful analysis of personal items such as rosaries and pictures of great grandparents, cultural artifacts, or even books and music pieces that really helped shape their lives. Despite being fully remote, this exhibition helped build community among Carter students, while also helping to enhance the IB program.
