What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Kerry James Marshall, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
I used a stippling technique. This type of mark-making is created when little dots are placed closer and further apart from each other to create different values. I felt that the tiny dots helped me to control the many values shown on different shapes. All of my shapes aren’t the most proportional in my pre-instructional drawing. I also learned the many ways that I can shade my shapes without smudging. I see improvement in the quality of my work and shading, Overall my lines are straighter and the drawing is more interesting to look at. Three things that make my drawing convincing is, shading because that is how you can make things appear in 3D. The second thing is making sure that objects are proportional, your drawing wouldn’t be believable if an apple was bigger than a camera. The third thing is perspective, making sure that blocks and other objects that you can clearly see many sides of go back to a clear vanishing point. My final and fourth thing is shadows, if your object does not have a corresponding shadow the object will appear flat.
