To create four equally formed tiles
To demonstrate the effects of layering glaze colors
To develop glazing skills
To contribute to a test tile wall for current and future ceramics students
Making ceramic pieces involves precision and perseverance. While making my tiles, I had to redo some of them because the measurements were slightly off. This is because I wanted to make sure they were the right size. I have experienced various challenges such as my glaze cracking and peeling off, but I worked around this and made tiles that look the same. It took time to do this and required small things like wiping off the sides of the tiles with a sponge and making sure the hole was big enough, but I have worked hard to make this my best work.
I was surprised at how much the colors mixed and blended. I saw some other peoples’ tiles didn't do this, so I thought that was interesting. I also noticed that in my tile with the snake, some sapphire pooled in the mold where black tulip didn’t. This was surprising because I thought the black tulip would cover all of the sapphire.
I have learned not to assume what the glaze is going to do. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by how the black tulip combined with the other colors. I know to take my time and pay attention to the small things because they make a big difference in the final result. Finally, I know to persevere when things go wrong and be open to trying something different because it can turn out better than expected.
