Purpose:
To use the correct facial proportions to draw yourself as accurately as you can;
To draw the individual features, eyes, nose, mouth in a convincing 3D way;
To use charcoal and a stomp to show value changes and dimension.
From the group discussion, I learned that I needed to darken the entire drawing, especially the face. The shading on the face was much lighter than the sweatshirt and neck which caused the face to look like it was far closer to the camera than the neck. I think I darkened the drawing well.
The three main concepts I learned from this unit were the importance of contrast, attention to detail, and to make an accurate outline. Contrast is what makes drawings look 3D, it shows which parts of the drawing are close and which parts are far. Attention to detail was essential for this project because small details like eyelashes can make a drawing vivid or two dimensional. I also learned how valuable an outline is because I made the lower half of my face look far to narrow which causes the entire drawing to look unnerving. I also could have put more effort into outlining my eyes; the left eye is accurate but the right eye is a completely different shape.
