Purpose:
To understand and to demonstrate the basic structure of your eyes, nose, and mouth.
The three things I learned from drawing my eye, nose, and mouth with charcoal are how to use paper as a medium, to vary line thickness, and to pay special attention to the outline. In this assignment, I used brown paper as a medium value. I didn’t have to shade a large part of my nose and eye because of that. I think it is very important to learn because it makes you pay special attention to shading. The next thing I learned is to vary line thickness when adding detail. I never realized that to draw a mouth, you make it 3D by just shading with repeated curved lines. Varying my line thickness was essential because lips have small cracks that are represented perfectly by a thicker line. The last thing I learned is to pay special attention to the outline. When drawing my own features, I found that the outline we were taught to draw before we started shading is for a generic feature. To make a facial feature my own, I had to consider how it is different from the generic feature we drew before. All in all, the facial features project taught me a lot and is good preparation for the upcoming self-portrait.
