To promote positive role models in the lives of students
To empower students to stand up for what they believe is right
To create a personal work of art based on students’ interpretation of an Unsung Hero’s character and actions;
To reflect on your experiences by writing an impact paper that articulates your personal journey and interprets their work for the viewer.
The Unsung Hero Project expanded my knowledge on people who aren’t as appreciated in life. For example, the person I researched changed the world of women’s sports. She was the first female director at a college and got many awards for doing many things. Like, she then tried to bring awareness to how discluded females are and the inequality that the school had. She really inspired and stood out to me from the others because of what she did to make that change for women in sports. To incorporate that inspiration, I created a piece of artwork which has lots of aspects in her life. I painted Christine Grant holding a book which represents her life story. This included a field hockey player since she had played field hockey. This is significant because while she was changing the sports industry, she brought more awareness to the game of field hockey. With Christine Grants’ other hand, I made her hold a trophy. This trophy symbolizes all of her achievements in sports including her getting elected to the NACDA Hall of Fame and being part of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletic for Women. While she got awards, sports like soccer won a lot of NCAA Championships during her time. Which is why I included other sports that she didn’t play, to show that sports expanded a lot. The last thing that inspired me about her were the struggles she faced. She had to encounter many people in order to break barriers and stereotypes. Therefore, in my artwork, I included a cloud above her head to show that there was frustration and anger. Overall, Christine Grant’s story inspired to create many pieces of her life to show what she has done to the world for life.
Making this piece of artwork has changed my outlook on life in many ways. To go on, I learned throughout that there are many struggles that everyone faces, no matter how big or how little. Especially in Christine Grants’ life. She had many struggles, and I realized that when I was painting on the clouds. In order to get good things in life, you have to go through hardships. Like she got many awards for doing that, in which I also realized that when I was painting on the trophy to symbolize her awards. Because of creating this piece of artwork, my perspective in life changed in a prominent way.
