The Integrated Treatment of Language and Content (TILC) is a methodological approach aimed at teaching language and content in an integrated manner in non-linguistic areas or subjects, promoting active, deeper and more meaningful learning.
In addition to paying attention to the teaching of academic language, TILC also aims to develop the learners' metacognitive skills, critical awareness and intercultural perspective, in order to achieve high performance in the disciplinary contingents and at the same time enrich their skills in the use of the language in which the area or subject is taught.
The TILC methodology aims at the simultaneous improvement of students' communicative competence in a language and the results obtained in an area or subject. This methodology is applied in Catalan -especially when it is not the students' first language-, in Spanish and in additional languages. In this latter case, the methodology is known by the acronym CLIL (integrated learning of contents and foreign language) and often also appears in the form CLIL, when the foreign language is English, or ÉMILE, when the foreign language is French.
Integrated learning of content and foreign language (CLIL/EMILE) is an educational approach in which the contents of a subject are taught totally or partially in a foreign language to the majority of learners.
The application of this methodology translates into an increase in the opportunities to learn and practice the language without increasing the hours of the curriculum specifically dedicated to the teaching and learning of the additional language in question.
CLIL/EMILE helps to increase the learner's linguistic competence through cognitive challenges and problem-solving activities. At the same time, it promotes and encourages learner autonomy and helps them develop thinking skills. CLIL/EMILE classes are characterized by an authentic use of the language, that is to say, with a real purpose, a fact that is much more meaningful for the students.
