Burrows Apprenticeship

Search for a Star

The Search for a Star programme helps with employability skills training and work experience that could lead to an amazing apprenticeship with Burrows Motor Company

Burrows Motor Company are a family based business with 8 Toyota, Mazda and Kia dealerships in Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield and Worksop. As a socially responsible employer, for several years Burrows Motor Company has recruited local young people through apprenticeships, most of which still work within the business. For the fourth year running, Burrows Motor Company are continuing their association with Gaia Innovation and the Search for a Star programme. Starting in September 2019 the programme is aimed at Y11 and Y13 students to highlight to them the opportunities available within the business. Burrows are looking to recruit both Customer Consultant apprentices and Vehicle Technician apprentices.

Over the last three years, the Search For A Star Programme has placed 33 apprentices into the Burrows administration offices, showrooms and workshops!

This programme is free to all participants and helps to equip students with valuable employability skills and experience that will lead to some of them securing an apprenticeship. We believe the usual interview and CV application process is not appropriate for school leavers to demonstrate their potential, so a comprehensive programme has been designed to inform students and parents about Burrows Motor Company and to enable Burrows to get to know the students and see the contribution they could make to the team. There are five stages to this programme:

1) Outreach To Y11 Students

We would welcome the opportunity to speak to your whole Y11 group to present to them not only about the programme but also why the automotive industry is an exciting advanced technology industry to be involved with. Burrows is an inclusive employer and it is particularly important that we speak to female and BAME students who are currently underrepresented in the sector; we find many of these students change their perception and are keen to participate once they are better informed.

A Gaia Innovation team member will lead the presentation, along with a Burrows apprentice who will share their story. The presentation could be part of any post 16 pathways preparation that you may already be doing with your students and can showcase the general benefits of a typical apprenticeship route.

2) Dealership Open Evening

This event will allow your students to meet both the Burrows and Toyota Academy teams. Students will learn more about the apprenticeships on offer and have a tour of the site, before participating in a career speed networking event with the staff they will be working with. We encourage parents/guardians to attend as it is important for them to also understand the benefits of the apprenticeship route and meet the Burrows staff who will be mentoring and working with their children, to give them confidence in the programme. You will also be more than welcome to attend if you wish.

3) Employability Skills Training and Assessment Day

Students who wish to progress to the next stage are asked to attend a full day at a dealership. They will participate in activities to improve their interview skills, learn how to make a positive first impression and how to present themselves to have the best effect. In the afternoon they will meet their possible future manager for a brief interview for the apprenticeship position. All students will receive a Certificate of Attendance for their CV portfolio. These days will take place in April 2020.

4) Work Experience Week

Selected students will participate in a work experience week allowing them to gain a greater understanding of the apprenticeship role they are interested in. They will have a mentor during this period to work alongside who will also assess if they have the enthusiasm and potential to be offered an apprenticeship. All students will receive a professional reference for their CV portfolio.

5) Job Offers Made

A minimum of 13 students will be offered an apprenticeship for commencement in September 2020.
