The written examination is conducted simultaneously for all applicants. However, certified applicants and lateral transfers may be exempt from the exam. A driver’s license with photo is required for test admission. The exam tests basic knowledge and is divided into four sections: reading comprehension, grammar, mathematics and writing. Calculators, dictionaries, and electronic devices are not permitted for the exam.
As part of the City of Wylie Police Department application process, you will need to complete a physical fitness assessment. This assessment will be a row test, designed to be job-related and aligned with business necessity. The required times for the row test will be based on your gender, weight, and age, and will be determined at the time of the assessment. Wylie Police requires a 70% to pass the row.

Candidates will be given a Personal History after the written and physical examinations. These must be completed and returned on a specified date. Candidates will be screened to ensure they do not meet any automatic disqualifiers. All information will be confirmed and any omissions or falsifications are grounds for rejection.

Qualified candidates will interview with four to five members of the of the Wylie Police Department and various members of other departments from the City of Wylie. The candidate should expect the interview to last from 30 minutes to one hour.
Qualified candidates will be recommended for an interview with the Police Chief or another member of the Command Staff. Upon completion of the interview, selected candidates may receive a conditional offer of employment. This offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, drug screening, medical evaluation, psychological assessment, and polygraph examination.
Upon passing the Chief's Interview, the Background Investigator will conduct a thorough background investigation. All information will be confirmed. Omissions or falsifications are grounds for rejection.
Each candidate must undergo an evaluation conducted by a licensed psychologist and is required to submit to a polygraph examination arranged by the Wylie Police Department.
Prior to being hired, each candidate is required to undergo a thorough medical examination provided by the City of Wylie. This examination will include testing for drug dependency or illegal drug use. Candidates will be given a vision examination at no cost to the applicant. This examination is to ensure all applicants meet the vision requirements.
Non-TCOLE-certified recruits hired by Wylie PD will be required to attend the police academy. Wylie PD uses but is not limited to using, the Collin College Law Enforcement Academy located within the Central Campus of Collin College.
All new officers, whether lateral transfers or academy graduates, are required to complete a 4-6 week Mini Academy. The Mini Academy helps set you up for success in the Field Training Program by teaching you things that are specific to the Wylie Police Department such as policy and procedure, use of technology, defense tactics, and firearms training.
Following the Mini Academy, each officer begins their career with a structured 16-week Field Training Program, designed to build confidence and ensure readiness for solo patrol. This program is intended to fully prepare officers to serve the community with professionalism, sound judgment, and confidence from day one. Lateral officers may be eligible for a shortened Field Training Program based on their prior experience and performance.
