Created in 2015 by the United Nations Member States, the Sustainable Development Goals (more commonly known as SDGs), stand as a call-for-action across the world. The aim of the SDGs is to better both the world and all creatures inhabiting it by the year 2030. While the UN is currently behind on many topics, continued partnership of both Member States and their citizens can get everyone much closer to their goals in the next 5 years.
SDG 11 is one focused on preventing problems with our evergrowing population. With a rise in people, especially in cities we must aim to make the places they live livable, through increased safety, sustainability, affordability, and inclusion. SDG 11 is split into 10 different targets ranging from supporting low-income communities to protecting citizens from natural disasters, and in turn nature from the damage of cities. If you also want to support SDG 11, the UN recommends shopping locally, voting for those who share SDG 11 ideals, and participating in community projects meant to uplift low-income communities.
Target 11.4 aims to protect the world's natural heritage and culture. While this target has a global audience, most commonly we see it affect Indigenous communities, especially in Asian countries like Syria, China, Yemen, and India. Many indigenous communities have gone through centuries of colonization, leaving some to feel as if their culture has all but disappeared. One of the stratiges to alleviate this is finding cultural artifcates, that are either underprotected or lost to time, and marking them as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. My project aims to drive forward Target 11.4 with a different strategy. Through my exchange in Taiwan I hope to improve the American opinion on Taiwan and vice versa. As well as teach each country about the other's culture to help improve the spread of cultural heritage across the world.
