Many tend to believe that being a black woman I'd noticeably stick out like a sore thumb, but I actually found that in most cases stories of locals staring and taking pictures were unfounded.
One of the biggest ways I found to express my own black culture was through my hair, I used many of my regular styles to include my new Taiwanese friends (like inviting them to pick my bead colors) and teach black history and culture.
Many thanks to my Japanese friend Noe, for always being very interested in learning the history behind black hairstyles <3
In certain East Asian countries you might be hard pressed to find deodorant. This isn't because of lack of hygiene but actually because of the ABCC11 gene that prevents the odor we usually associate with sweat.
While I didn't run into this problem in Taiwan, I did meet someone in real life with this gene and tell her how lucky she was!
