The trumpet is a member of the brass family. It is one of the oldest instruments. It was first used for signaling in ancient China, Egypt, and Scandinavia. The trumpet originally was long with no valves. During Roman times, the trumpet was played at military and civilian ceremonies. In the 1300's, the trumpet started to get a more compact shape, and music was starting to be written for it. By the 1700's, the trumpet was a regular member of the orchestra. Today trumpets are found in bands, orchestras, jazz bands, brass ensembles, and popular music. Famous trumpet players include Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, and Arturo Sandoval.
