The Trombone is a member of the brass family. It is unique because it is the only modern instrument that uses a slide. The trombone's ancestor is the tromba and sackbut. The modern trombone is almost the same as the trombone found in 1450. Trombones were typically used in town concert bands, churches to accompany singers, and military bands. By 1850 the trombone became a regular member in the orchestra. There are 3 types of trombones: alto, tenor, and bass trombone. Trombones can be found in bands, orchestras, jazz bands, ensembles, and popular groups. Famous trombone players include Tommy Dorsey, Trombone Shorty, Joseph Alessi, Wycliffe Gordon, and Slide Hampton.
