The baritone and euphonium are members of the brass family. They are trumpet-like instruments that were used in ancient times for signaling and ceremony. By Roman times, brass instruments were used in military events. Baritones and Euphoniums are similar but the baritone has a crooked bell where the euphonium has a straight bell. The euphonium typically has 4 valves but may have 3 like the baritone. Modern day baritones and Euphoniums were first used in the 1850's in military and school bands. Nowadays, baritones and euphoniums are typically found in marching bands, bands, and sometimes orchestras. They are closely related to the tuba. Famous Euphonium players include Steven Mead and David Childs.
