ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS.....SETTING YOU UP FOR SUCCESS
Viking Virtual Academy students and their parent/guardian are required to attend an orientation meeting.
Our goal and intention for this orientation is to learn how to log-in, access your courses, learn how to troubleshoot technical issues, and most importantly--get all your questions answered about your courses.
At the orientation meeting, students will receive their technology and their information to access their courses.

SPECIAL EDUCATION.......SUPPORTING YOUR SUCCESS
The Williams Valley School District complies with the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure that educational services are provided to students with disabilities. These federal laws appear as Chapters 14 (Special Education) and 15 (Section 504) in the Pennsylvania School Code. Students enrolled in the VVA program of studies that have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a Section 504 plan will be accommodated according to the stipulations of those documents. In either case students and their parents will need to meet with the Virtual Administrator and the Director of Student Services regarding the review, implementation, and oversight of the provisions of their respective (IEP or 504) plans.
The district does not automatically conduct evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services. Parents who believe/suspect that their children are eligible for services should contact the school for further assistance. The school will work with the parents to ensure proper procedures are followed in the evaluation process.
In addition to school staff, it is critical that parents of students receiving services monitor their student’s progress on a continual basis and maintain open communication with the school regarding problems or issues that surface.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.....SUPPORTING STUDENT LEARNING
As an instructional team--we are continuously evaluating our procedures for evaluating student work...not just for "getting it right"...but also for evidence of learning. It is in that spirit.....of the roots of education...."educe"....to bring out and develop the full potential of each student....we share with you our current approach and procedures around identifying and determining if AI has been used in a student's work submission.
We recognize that AI is an ever-changing, rapidly evolving emerging technology. In collaboration with our VLN partners--these are steps around procedures for our Viking Virtual team around determining AI use in student work submissions:
1. No Reduction of Points for Suspected AI Use: Students should not have points reduced solely based on suspected AI use.
2. Gradebook Warning Message: If the grader strongly believes a student may have used AI to generate their essay or paper, we recommend they include a warning in the gradebook comments. This message should express their concerns and kindly remind the student not to use AI in future writing tasks. Importantly, no points will be deducted at this stage.
3. Escalation to Homeroom Teacher: If the grading teacher’s concerns persist after providing the warning message, they are encouraged to reach out to the student's VLN homeroom teacher. The VLN homeroom teacher and team, in collaboration with the district, will assess the situation, determine its legitimacy, and decide on any further actions that may be necessary (i.e., a student/parent conference, point deductions, or other appropriate measures).
