SGCN are native species, determined by The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) in collaboration with specialists, that have low and declining populations or vulnerabilities that require strategic conservation. Their selection is based on the best available data, including population status, trend, and known threats. The 2015 SWAP identified over 1,000 species across 13 taxa groups, and the newer 2025 plan has expanded this, designating 1,292 species across 18 taxa groups. This effort is a central component for maintaining the diversity and health of the State’s wildlife.
