Designated Uses
Water quality standards are the basis of the assessment process.
In West Virginia, the water quality standards are coded as 47CSR2 – Legislative Rules of the Department of Environmental Protection – Requirements Governing Water Quality Standards.
Every waterbody is assigned designated uses, which have associated water quality criteria describing specific conditions that must be met to ensure the waterbody can support that use.
Each designated use is summarized below.
