Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history.

Plan:

Grades K-2 will be coloring pictures of influential jazz artists and writing one interesting fact about them.

Grades 3-5  will be studying the history of jazz music in February. Jazz is a uniquely African American musical and cultural tradition and has its earliest origins in the days of American slavery.

To showcase our learning in music class, a student will read a short blurb about a piece of music during the morning announcements. The selected pieces of music will reflect some aspect of the African American experience and will draw connections to our learning in class. A short excerpt of the piece (30s-1m) will be played for the school. This will be done each day in February.

All students will participate in the Black History Month Scavenger hunt.

Fords Middle School Step Team and The Diversity Council students collaboration.
