2025-2026 Artifacts
During Autism Awareness Month, we displayed a bulletin board highlighting the celebrating minds of all kinds. We also had a bingo challenge where students played during lunch and learned about one another and their similarities and differences.
The IMS spirit week culminated the month where students raised awareness of the varius differences of people with autism.
Students participated in a meaningful classroom activity to recognize Autism Acceptance Month and celebrate individual differences. The lesson began with a discussion about the importance of acceptance, inclusion, and understanding that everyone has unique strengths and qualities. Each student then reflected on their own individuality by completing the prompt, “I am unique because…,” on multicolored paper. These personal statements were crafted into ribbon shapes and assembled into a collaborative bulletin board display, symbolizing unity, diversity, and respect for all.
For Autism Awareness Month, students first watched a Youtube video where young students on the spectrum detailed their experiences. This was followed by a class discussion where my students talked (anonymously) about friends, family, and loved ones who are on the autism spectrum.
The next day, we watched a video about Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon, who is said to be on the autism spectrum. Students then chose a Pokemon and wrote short stories. They were encouraged to incorporate prior knowledge of autism, or something they learned from our mini-lesson, into their stories.
