Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs, and adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history.

2024-2025 Artifacts

Selma - Class Film

Students in 7th grade civics watched the movie Selma and reflected and discussed the impact of the events on the civil rights movement. They also discussed the legislation created by President Johnson and the long lasting effects that it had on society.

March - Graphic Novel Series

Students were offered the "March" Graphic Novel Series to explore and read during class. March is a graphic novel trilogy co-written by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Nate Powell, chronicling Lewis's firsthand experiences in the Civil Rights Movement. Through powerful black-and-white visuals, it depicts key moments such as the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, and the Selma to Montgomery marches, offering a deeply personal and inspiring account of the fight for justice and equality.

Four Famous Figures in Black History

Throughout the month of February, students read about four influential figures in Black History: Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Owens, Ruby Bridges, and Bessie Coleman. They then chose one of these people to create a Storyboardthat comic or a portrait & bio highlighting what the person is best known for.
