Student Skills In Focus
Learning Goals
Students will:
Preplan a design of needs and wants.
Create a functioning system of interacting parts through designing a home floor plan.
Use the challenge to develop the Pillar Skills in focus.
Questions To Ask Students:
What are the main components to a home that people NEED?
How can you incorporate what you NEED with what you WANT so the home is comfortable to live in?
Consider the "whys." Why are you designing the layout the way you are? What do you hope the room does for the people that live there?
Essential Questions:
How do "needs" and "wants" influence the design process?
What features of a design solution allow for it to best meet the needs criteria?
How do all parts of a system influence the greater whole.
NJ Student Learning Standards:
• 8.2.5.ED.4: Explain factors that influence the development and function of products and systems (e.g., resources, criteria, desired features, constraints).
• 3-5-ETS1-1 Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
