What worked for FLEX?
Being able to choose my own projects worked really well because it made me more motivated and invested. Ms. Thielen’s instruction and weekly check-ins also helped a lot with staying on track and understanding expectations. I also appreciated being able to connect fitness to things that truly matter to me, such as sleep, stress, fencing, etc.
What didn't work for FLEX?
Having very few deadlines made it easy to procrastinate. The amount of writing was also more than I expected, which was challenging. On top of that, my back injury/condition limited what I could do and held back some of my projects.
What could I, the student, have done differently to make my FLEX experience more successful?
I could have managed my time better and stayed on top of my work instead of pushing things back. Starting earlier would have reduced stress and made projects easier to handle.
What could my FLEX team have done differently to make my FLEX experience more successful?
I think Ms. Thielen did a really good job keeping me on track and explaining what was needed. There isn’t much I would change. Outside of school, more consistent check-ins from my parents might have helped, but they did support me at times, and it's important for me to remain independent where I can.
Would you recommend FLEX to others? Why or why not?
I would 100% recommend FLEX. It lets students work on things they care about while building real-life skills. I would just warn people not to take it if they expect it to be easy, because it takes responsibility and effort.
What did you learn about yourself as a learner in FLEX PE?
I learned that reflection is difficult for me. Looking back and analyzing what I learned doesn’t come naturally. But once I sit down and really look at what I’ve done, my thoughts start to flow, and it gets much easier.
What did you learn about yourself as a human being in FLEX PE?
I learned that I’m capable of setting realistic goals, and I enjoy doing that. I find it very rewarding to work toward something clear and actually accomplish it.
