I’m Sam Thies, a senior at BUHS. I spend a lot of my time gaming, hanging out with friends, going for walks and hikes, and taking animal photos. Something fun about me is that I love creating videos, and entertaining people is one of my biggest passions. After high school, my main goal is to move to North Carolina and dig deeper into my passions, whether through school or by continuing the work I already do.
Why Flex PE?
I’m taking FLEX PE and FLEX Elective because I’m working toward graduating early this year. FLEX PE this fall was mainly a credit decision, but I liked the idea of managing my own progress.
Why Flex Elective?
I chose FLEX Elective for 2 credits in the spring because it lets me earn credit for the projects and videos I put so much time into outside of school, which makes the class feel useful for my real life.
Structure & Process:
Flex PE
FLEX PE is mostly student-led, so I set my own fitness and wellness goals rather than following a set plan. Although I am expected to pick projects that fit into 3 categories: Physical, Mental, and Medical. A lot of the work happens outside of class, where I track my progress on my own. In class, Ms. Thielen checks in, gives feedback, and helps keep me on track, but she doesn’t directly assign day-to-day work.
FLEX Elective
FLEX ELECT is also very self-directed, but instead of focusing on fitness, it’s centered around a personal interest or skill. And, this interest/skill does not need to fit into any one category. For me, that’s content creation. Most of the work happens outside of class, where I plan, create, and improve my projects. In class, I mainly use the time to check in, get feedback, and adjust my goals.
Post High School:
PHS Plans:
After high school, I plan to work for about a year, keep my job at The Marina, and keep building my YouTube channel on the side. Once I’ve saved enough, I want to move to the Edmonton area in Alberta, Canada. I’m not sure yet if I’ll go to college once I’m there, but I know I want to keep growing my photography, my content creation, and my fencing by joining a real club and competing in tournaments. I also want to stay involved with reptiles. I even have a pretty obscure dream of starting a reptile breeding business someday, though I’m still unsure about that path.
How do these Classes Relate To PHS?
FLEX PE:
This class connects to my plans after high school because it helps me build discipline and healthier routines that actually stick. It’s made me more aware of how I manage stress, energy, and consistency. Those skills matter in real life, whether it’s fitness, work, or just staying organized and responsible with my time.
FLEX Elect:
This connects directly to my passion for content creation and what I want to pursue after high school. I’ve been interested in making content for a while, and I want to keep developing it into something more serious. This class helps me take that interest further by giving me structure while I work on improving my skills and figuring out how to turn it into a possible career path.
