School Starts Tuesday, 08/29/23!
Students from the Vietnamese DLI program matriculate into middle and high school programs that support them with further study in target languages. We teach based on three pillars, with a focus on College and Career Readiness: Bilingualism & Biliteracy, Academic Achievement, and Sociocultural Competence.
The state's Pathway to Biliteracy Award is attainable in 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade. Completion of 12th grade with proficient language acquisition will result in the California Department of Education formally recognizing a Seal of Biliteracy on students' high school diplomas.
In the 50:50 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) model, the target language is used in all grades for 50% of the instructional time and English is used for 50%.
At each grade level, the amount of instruction in English and the target language remain the same and is considered a "simultaneous literacy" model, as developing literacy in the target language and English are focused on simultaneously.
The 50:50 model requires a closely aligned curricular program where instruction in key content areas, such as Language Arts and Math, so that the skills are built upon in each language, instead of being re-taught in both languages.
The goals are bilingualism, biliteracy, multi-cultural competence, achievement at or above grade level.
The 7th-8th program is designed to further DLI student's knowledge of Social Studies, Advanced Vietnamese Language & Culture (3 & 4) in the context of studying rigorous content standards.
Students will work towards receiving their Biliteracy Medals in 8th Grade.
Students demonstrating English and Vietnamese proficiency will receive the State Seal of Biliteracy at Grade 12.
Students can maintain their language through core and elective offerings.
