Attendance is a key component to learning. Just as in a job, one can not be considered an asset if they can not be relied upon to be there; the same is true in an Engineering classroom. In our classroom, students work in teams to problem solve, design, and build with real world applications. One who is consistently absent places their partner and themselves at an academic disadvantage. Studies have also shown a direct correlation between increased attendance issues and decreased academic performance. Furthermore, these studies have linked students with poor attendance with higher rates of job turnover, as school attendance relates to job attendance. Attendance is a skill that must be mastered.
Widefield School District 3's Attendance Policy states for every excused day missed, the student has 2 school days to make any work due on that/those days. If a child has an excused absence on Friday, any work that was due that day must be made up by the following Tuesday. This does not extend any deadlines for items that are due on Monday or Tuesday, unless arrangements are made with individual teachers. If a student is excused for an extended period of time, for example a full week (5 days). Anything missed the first day must be made up by the second day back. Day 2 by the 4th day and so on, until the final day is due 2 weeks after it was initially due, plus whatever is due on the normal days.
Historically, students who miss more than 5 class periods in any course do not pass; unless they are willing to make up the time by scheduling to come in and working during their lunch periods, Advisory class, or by appointment. The only requirements for lunch periods are you must give the instructor 24 hour notice of your intent to come in and you must work and eat.
