homework & Grading

homework:

Each night, your child should:

1. Complete any classwork not finished at school.

2. Read 30+ minutes. Students should read 10 of those minutes aloud to someone.

3. Review math facts 0-12:  (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing) **No more that 10 minutes a day. A great review site is Pedagonet Fast Math because it can be customized for individual needs. Every 5th grader should know their facts 0-12 with automaticity.

4. Play outside.

Grading:

Where can I check grades to see how my child is doing? Current grades and end of quarter grades are now published online only.

Go to www.wsd.net anytime and click on the icon “Power School”.  Then follow the instructions.  Teachers, subjects and grades should appear for ALL your children.  If you do not see your child listed, please call the help line listed at the website.

How did my child earn that grade?

Each week we introduce a new skill or two in each subject area. During the week, students practice using the skills in a variety of ways, applying them to what they already know.  If he/she doesn’t get it the 1st time, no problem, we give him/her help and more practice opportunities. We regularly quiz the classes. PLEASE GO OVER GRADED WORK/TESTS WITH YOUR CHILD. This will help greatly. Students can ALWAYS redo assignments. We believe in the POWER OF YET!  If at first you don’t succeed…..

What do the numbers mean?

4 – means your child has mastered the concepts taught to this point.

3 – means your child is close to mastering the concepts taught.

2 – means your child is ½ way to mastering the concepts taught.

1 – means your child isn’t getting it, but hasn’t given up.
