Financial Aid Packages
Awards and loan offers from colleges are sent directly to the student following their acceptance to their program.
You will receive a financial aid package from each school you are accepted to detailing the financial aid package that you are eligible to receive.
Review and compare award letters carefully before making a decision.
What is Financial Aid?
Financial Aid is any money received to help pay for college or career training. It can include:
Grants: Financial Aid that does not have to be paid back and is awarded based on financial need.
Scholarships: Financial Aid that does not have to be paid back and is most often awarded based on merit (something the student has done such a grades, test scores, etc.)
Work Study: Financial Aid that is earned through a part-time job on campus for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses.
Loans: Financial Aid that has to be paid back once the student is no longer enrolled in school. Loans can be awarded by the federal government or by private institutions and both students and parents can borrow funds.
How do I apply for Financial Aid?
Complete the FAFSA, this is the first step for all Financial Aid! You can list up to 20 schools to submit your FAFSA results to.
Visit the Financial Aid websites for the colleges and universities you’re interested in to see if they have additional financial aid applications and deadlines.
Complete the CSS Profile (if needed- this only applies to select schools.)
Complete scholarship applications. The West Seneca Scholarship Book will be posted online in your Student Services Google Classroom in November. Additional local, regional, and national scholarships are posted on a rolling basis in your Google Classroom.
Track your progress using the FAFSA Checklist.
What is the FAFSA?
FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All seniors are encouraged to complete the FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA is free and can qualify students for all types of financial aid. Many colleges and universities require students to have a FAFSA on file in order to receive any financial aid, including scholarships.
Below are a series of videos from The Department of Education to explain the process of completing the FAFSA and applying for Financial Aid:
Apply for a federal student aid identification number (FSA ID) in September of your Senior year at www. fsaid.ed.gov
Complete the FAFSA as soon as it opens, typically October 1st, at www.fafsa.ed.gov
The sooner you apply, the more federal aid there is available for you to receive
What do you need to complete the FAFSA?
Students and their parents will need this information:
Both the student and one parent/guardian will need an FSA ID to access the FAFSA and sign the form electronically
The student begins the FAFSA application and invites their parent/guardian to be a "contributor" using the email that the parent signed up for their FSA ID number with
The FSA ID must be obtained before you start the FAFSA and it is recommended to apply for the ID 3-5 days before you plan on starting the FAFSA
Student and parent/guardian social security numbers
What do you no longer need to complete the FAFSA?
Students and parents/guardians no longer need their tax documents to complete the FAFSA.
All of this information is automatically accessed from the IRS through the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange (FADDX)
If you are a NY State resident planning on attending a college within the state, you should apply for TAP.
To apply, click on the TAP application link at the end of your FAFSA application or go to https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw
Your aid offer explains the types and amounts of aid a college is offering you, and your expected costs for the year. If you've been accepted to multiple colleges, compare the costs and aid offers. Accept the aid from the school that's best for you and inform them of other sources of aid (such as scholarships) you expect to receive.
