As part of our commitment to fostering equity and inclusion, the African American Male Achievement Initiative (AAMAI) conducted focus groups with African American male students across Waukegan Public Schools. These focus groups provided valuable insights into their lived experiences within our schools, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for improvement. Their unfiltered feedback revealed critical areas where we can better support their academic success, sense of belonging, and overall well-being.
The results of these focus groups have shaped the foundation of the AAMI Action Plan, guiding our efforts to create culturally responsive classrooms, provide targeted social and emotional support, and strengthen family and community engagement. We are grateful to our students for their honesty and candor, which will help us create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all.
