Most of our English as a Foreign Language professors teach credit-bearing English courses at the University and occasional non-credit course at the Woosong Language Institute, as well as extra programs such as Star English (an English Corner style program for students to practice their spoken English informally). In addition, there are opportunities for professors to teach other General Education courses as well as take up administrative duties.
The General English Language (GEL) program at Woosong University, which administers our English skills courses, comprises around 100 full-time, native English professors, which means native English professors comprise almost half of all foreign professors at Woosong University.
All Woosong University undergraduates take four semesters of English skills classes, and our General English Program (GEL) program facilitates those classes. In spring semesters, we teach conversation and listening; in fall semesters, we teach reading and writing. The GEL program also offers elective classes, and some advanced English classes, such as the Global Business Communication Skills (GBCS) program.
Most of our required university classes have between 15 and 25 students, but this can vary. Some programs have 30 students, while some have fewer than 10. Our course objectives are designed according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards for English classes (see opposite). Most of our students are in the A or B level. Most of our professors teach first- and second-year required courses. The maximum number of teaching hours per week is 20, and we teach a 15-week semester. Professors are expected to keep 4 office hours per week and attend 5-6 required in-house professional development sessions and meetings each semester, such as the General Faculty Meeting at the start of each semester. You can see a sample class schedule below, and get more information on our Useful Links page.
Whilst the core of our work is teaching the GEL courses described above, there are various other opportunities for professors.
Students at our three international schools, SolBridge International School of Business, Endicott College of International Studies (ECIS), and JW Kim College of Future Studies (JCFS), all also study English and communication courses, which are taught by our English professors. In addition, there are a variety of other general education courses and Graduate School courses that are often taught by our English as a Foreign Language faculty, if they have additional relevant qualifications and experience. These courses include Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to History.
We also have Woosong Language Institute (WLI) where we offer one-on-one or small group English communication classes for the local community. These are very popular and often the same students come back semester after semester. Finally, many of our professors also take administration or other additional duties around the University. In short, there are many opportunities for professors to expand their skills and teaching repertoire, depending on their qualifications and interest.
Moving abroad, or from one country or job to another, can be stressful. Sometimes, input and perspectives from professors at the university can help reduce the stress. We have two volunteer professors, both of whom have been at Woosong in various capacities for quite a few years, who are ready and willing to answer your questions. (Neither of them are members of the HR Team)
Mike is an Assistant Professor at Woosong Information College. He is also very active in Korea TESOL, both nationally and with our local chapter. Mike is from Canada. You can email Mike at: mikepeacock@woosong.org or mpeacock@gmail.com.

Typically our professors have 20 hours of class time each week, in addition to conducting office hours, attending required meetings and preparing for classes.
