Library update 24.02.23

Dear students,

The 27th of February to the 5th of March is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

In light of this, the Library has put together some resources for you, to help you understand eating disorders, or seek help if you are struggling.

You can find the resources on our Google Site or via the displays in the Library.

How many people in the UK have an eating disorder?

The eating disorder charity Beat believes approximately 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder. Around 25% of those affected by an eating disorder are male.

Recent research from the NHS information centre showed that up to 6.4% of adults displayed signs of an eating disorder (Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, 2007).

The Health and Care Information Centre published figures in February 2014 showed an 8% rise in the number of inpatient hospital admissions in the 12 months previous to October 2013. The Costs of Eating Disorders report found that this is indicative of the trend in increasing prevalence over time: a 34% increase in admissions since 2005-06 - approximately 7% each year.1

Library update 20.01.23

Dear students,

The Student Reading Appreciation Survey Report results are here!

This was your chance to tell us what types of books you read, how confident you are with reading, where you get book recommendations from, and your favourite books. It will form the basis of library and other interventions to help you become better readers.

Below is the abstract of the report but it can be read in full here.

Abstract

The Library developed a Google forms survey consisting of nine questions to assess students' attitudes to reading beyond set texts and administered this via the tutorial programme, eliciting a representative selection of responses from 239 students.  The key findings were that; there was a significant minority of students who indicated antipathy or indifference to reading beyond the curriculum, that many students may be reading a limited selection of non-curricular texts and that a significant minority of these titles are below age-appropriate levels, that promotion strategies need to take more account of students' opinions about genre and preferred sources of recommendation, that over half of the students reported some difficulties either in aspects of simple literacy, fluency or comprehension. It is recommended that a variety of diagnostic and reading remediation methods are developed to focus on the weakest readers as well as refocused collection development and marketing and it is stated that these concerns  have already led to the development of a whole school reading strategy for launch early in 2023.

In the Library, we are acutely aware of the current cost of living crisis and the effect this could have on your education.

As such we have found some useful resources and information that we think might be helpful to you, your friends and family.

Good morning! We are halfway through another busy week of online education and we hope it is going well.

In today’s Featured Resources Fiona has put together some resources to help supplement your learning, along with sociological resources on helping disabled students learn from home.

This week Lucia and Mark have been continuing, as they have done for many years, to provide one-to-one support to fellow students in academic skills such as; how to find and read academic articles, writing the arguments of others into your work, and structuring reports and presentations. Those students who attend sessions tell us they are really beneficial (honest!) and you too can book a Zoom with Mark or Lucia at mgallagher@wmsf.ac.uk for Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts related questions and laltalal@wmsf.ac.uk for Sciences, Mathematics, IT and Business and Economics.

LRC Update 02.03.21

Dear Students,

Good morning! In today's Featured Resources, we look at the impact of classical music on the brain. What actually happens is that the calming effect induced by classical music releases dopamine to spike pleasure. The dopamine also prevents the release of stress hormones. From here, mood is improved, which therefore clarifies thinking – making tasks like essay writing and studying a lot more enjoyable so give it a try!

LRC Update 01.03.21

Dear Students,

Good morning and welcome to March! It is now only a week until we start to return to school for COVID testing in the week commencing the 8th March and from the week after that onsite until the Easter holidays. More information to follow from tutors on all of these issues.

In today’s Featured Resources Mark has put together some key Healthcare and Medical Sciences careers links that will complement the fantastic resources and work provided by our Student Services Team. One of the key ways to gain a university's or employer's interest in you as a potential student or candidate is to demonstrate your initiative and internal motivation. A great way to do this is through extracurricular reading, watching, and listening. Check out these links.

LRC Update 26.02.21

Dear Students,

Good morning!  Another busy week of online education draws to close and we hope that you've all had a productive and enjoyable time learning with teachers, peers and support staff.

In today’s Featured Resources Mark has put together some key UK Legal blogs for those of you who are considering legal and associated qualifications and careers.  One of the best ways to understand how lawyers and other legal professionals think about significant legal issues and react to developments is to read their words.  Luckily for us the legal blogosphere is blooming and a range of digital awards from the likes of LexisNexus inspires and promotes eloquent, incisive and sometimes very funny prose from a range of legal professionals.  These can prove very useful when it comes to crafting a personal statement that won’t bore a law lecturer stiff!

Featured Resources :  Law Blogs

The Student Lawyer

Written, as the name suggests, by law students this blog contains concise, accessible and engaging articles on hot legal topics from all areas of the law that will provide the aspiring legal professional with an idea of the zeitgeist in both UK and international legal matters.

BarristerBlogger

From the keyboard of hugely experienced criminal barrister Matthew Scott of London’s Pump Court Chambers comes the Barrister Blogger.  Matthew has practised for 25 years and brings his erudition and wit to his monthly postings.  His articles on contemporary legal issues are accessible, authoritative and comprehensive.  Though you can be in for a long read - but you know that this is a key skill of the aspiring lawyer, right?  He also uses the engaging method of using fiction to explore and illustrate the law, which can be really gripping.

Pink Tape

Written by Lucy Reed, a barrister specialising in family law at Bristol’s St John’s Chambers and co-founder of the Transparency Project this is a informal, entertaining and argumentative exploration of the world of the family court system. It contains case news and musings and a portray of lawyers as real and humane.  Her news section, where she debunks myths and misinformation spouted by the “terrible, sloppy, malicious and inaccurate” reporting from some sections of the media in relation to family law is very entertaining.

The Secret Barrister

Current, funny and acute the Secret Barrister provides a candid view of on our ancient and some would say tottering criminal justice system, how it works and how it too often doesn’t, giving you a transparent portrayal of life at the criminal bar. Again, the aim is to correct the inaccurate reporting of cases – issues around legal aid in particular – by certain media outlets. The Secret Barrister is also an award winning author of Fake Law and The Secret Barrister that Mark has purchased for the LRC and you will soon be able to take out on loan.

RightsInfo

This award-winning site explores a human rights across a huge range of topics.  Founded by barrister Adam Wagner (who also set up the acclaimed UK Human Rights Blog), it provides engaging and accessible infographics, stories, videos, animations and helpful explainers on this significant area of UK and international law.

9 Reasons for the LGBTQ community to take pride onlineA generation ago, that teen would have lived for the day they could move to a big city, or at least to a country that isn’t actively repressing gay and trans rights. Until that time, the story goes, they’d be condemned to a life of secrecy, loneliness and possibly even self-harm. Today, that teen doesn’t have to feel so alone—at least in theory—because the internet makes it possible to connect with other LGBTQ people all over the world.

Uber drivers ruling: how thousands working in the UK’s gig economy could benefit Employment Law

In this article from The Conversation a doctoral student from the Law School of the University of York explores the significant legal ramifications of the Uber appeal case.

On Friday 19th the six justices of the UK supreme court dismissed Uber’s appeal against a landmark 2016 employment tribunal ruling that its drivers should be classed as workers with rights to the minimum wage and paid holidays and handed down a unanimous decision that has the potential to lead huge improvements for workers’ rights in the wider gig economy laying the foundations for a welter of  similar claims from online tutors, supply teachers or freelancers.

The Good Law Project – Holding Government to account

The Good Law Project is a not-for-profit campaign organisation that uses the law to protect the interests of the public fighting cases that defend, define or change the law and using litigation to engage and educate. They challenge abuses of power, exploitation, inequality, and injustice.

On the 18th February The Good Law Project won a significant victory in the High Court against the government and specifically Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health.  Mr Justice Chamberlain ruled “The Secretary of State acted unlawfully by failing to comply with the Transparency Policy” and that “there is now no dispute that, in a substantial number of cases, the Secretary of State breached his legal obligation to publish Contract Award Notices within 30 days of the award of contracts.” A judicial review has been won in the case brought by the project with Debbie Abrahams MP, Caroline Lucas MP, and Layla Moran MP.  This ruling means that the government has acted unlawfully in awarding contracts worth tens of millions of pounds during the current pandemic and focuses renewed attention on how and why certain firms, with little experience of PPE provision and with close connections to government ministers were awarded contracts.

Gale :  Global Issues in Context

Since the late twentieth century, the People's Republic of China has dramatically increased its geopolitical and economic influence. It remains one of the few remaining communist countries following the Cold War (1947–1991). Tensions between China and other countries over land and trade disputes have created challenges for the country's continued dominance and growth. The emergence of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Wuhan, Hubei, in late 2019 led to a pandemic that further strained China's relationship with the international community.

China a New World Order.  BBC

A tripartite documentary series from the BBC about contemporary China, focusing on her geopolitical, economic and foreign policy and relationship with other international power blocks.

Ancient China : Encylopaedia article

Ancient China produced what has become the oldest extant culture in the world. The name 'China' comes from the Sanskrit Cina (derived from the name of the Chinese Qin Dynasty, pronounced 'Chin') which was translated as 'Cin' by the Persians and seems to have become popularized through trade along the Silk Road from China to the rest of the world.

The Romans and the Greeks knew the country as 'Seres', “the land where silk comes from”. The name 'China' does not appear in print in the west until 1516 CE in Barbosa's journals narrating his travels in the east (though the Europeans had long known of China through trade via the Silk Road). Marco Polo, the famous explorer who familiarized China to Europe in the 13th century CE, referred to the land as 'Cathay. In Mandarin Chinese, the country is known as 'Zhongguo' meaning "central state" or "middle empire".

The British Museum:  Discover China

Chinese objects have been a part of the British Museum since its establishment based on the collection of Sir Hans Sloane. The collection has since grown to about 23,000 objects that span the Neolithic age to the present. It includes a wide range of objects such as paintings, prints, jade, bronzes, lacquer and ceramics that reflect the richness and diversity of China that has long been internationally connected.

How China is legally recognising same-sex couples, but not empowering them

Homosexuality has been a controversial topic across the legal and moral domains in China. Homosexual acts were officially decriminalised in 1997, but Chinese laws have yet to properly recognise or protect same-sex couples in the forms of marriage or de facto relationships.

On 11 February, the United Nations, partners worldwide, women and girls will mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Day focuses on the reality that science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

2021 Theme: Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the critical role of women researchers in different stages of the fight against COVID-19, from advancing the knowledge on the virus, to developing techniques for testing, and finally to creating the vaccine against the virus.

At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic also had a significant negative impact on women scientists, particularly affecting those at the early stages of their career, and thus contributing to widening the existing gender gap in science, and revealing the gender disparities in the scientific system, which need to be addressed by new policies, initiatives and mechanisms to support women and girls in science.

Remembering the ‘Glamour Boys’ – the gay MPs who warned 1930s Britain about Nazism

“In the 1920s and 1930s of buttoned-up Britain, homosexuality was an illicit act, and would remain that way until 1967 when the law changed in England and Wales. Even though gay culture was vibrant, it existed mostly underground, its community forced to socialise with a certain degree of covertness in order to avoid exposure and the risk of prison.”

LRC Update 05.02.21

Dear Students,

Good morning!  We hope that you have had a good week of study and are looking forward to some relaxation (and some study!) over the weekend.

In today's Featured Resources we have four articles about the concept of free will. Freedom of the will is the ability to make choices between alternative courses of action unimpeded by natural, social, or divine restraints. That we have free will seems common sense - but actually, the debate over free will has raged from the ancient past amongst philosophers, theologians, lawyers, ethicists, and more recently scientists, and social scientists and it is far from being obscure. How many times have you heard or read that an addiction 'made' someone behave in a certain way or that success is the product of hard work and will power alone? These comments all relate to the concept of free will. The articles below take the discussion further. Enjoy.

Gale in Context: Environmental Studies provides you with comprehensive information from academics, specialists and journalists to critically analyse and understand important topics that affect people around the world.  This launch page provides key reference, journal, magazine/news and video clip resources about the is key and much contested concept in Human Geography.

‘Globalisation is a term that has been widely used in a variety of academic and social contexts in recent years. In its broadest meaning, it describes the phenomenon or process by which profound economic, social, or cultural implications are engendered by the transnational circulation of ideas, languages, and concepts. Globalization is any process that contributes to increased connectivity and interdependence observed in international commerce, politics, or culture. Globalization is generally, but not exclusively, associated with the post-World War II era. The creation of the United Nations in 1945, the subsequent postwar economic reconstruction of Europe and Japan through American aid, and the promotion of more liberalized international trade through multilateral agreements signalled the beginning of this.’

LRC Update 03.02.21

Dear Students,

Good morning!  In today's update Featured Resources we look at three links of interest to Mathematicians; on the role of amateurs in mathematical problem solving through the Chromatic Number of the Plane Problem, how the public can (and cannot) assist Mathematicians via Massive Online Mathematics, and a range of lectures aimed at the general public on a variety of exciting themes from the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford.

We have extended the LRC survey deadline to the 5th of Feb and also increased the prize draw amount to £80.00 of Amazon vouchers. Whoohoo! See the link below to complete it and be in with the chance of winning that prize.

Remember that we are online to help from 9am-4pm each day with your homework and coursework research needs and also with academic writing skills, just email our OUTLOOK account lrcdept@wmsf.ac.uk and we will help you out!

Decades-Old Graph Problem Yields to Amateur Mathematician

This article explores how by making the first progress on the “chromatic number of the plane” problem in over 60 years, an anti-aging pundit has achieved mathematical immortality.  An interesting example of the contribution of the amateur mathematician in academic mathematical problem solving.

Is massively collaborative mathematics possible?

Of course, one might say, there are certain kinds of problems that lend themselves to huge collaborations. One has only to think of the proof of the classification of finite simple groups, or of a rather different kind of example such as a search for a new largest prime carried out during the downtime of thousands of PCs around the world. But my question is a different one. What about the solving of a problem that does not naturally split up into a vast number of subtasks? Are such problems best tackled by people for some that belongs to the set ? (Examples of famous papers with four authors do not count as an interesting answer to this question.)

The University of Oxford Mathematical Institute Public Lectures

Oxford Mathematics Public Lectures enable anyone with an interest in the subject to see the best mathematicians in action and to share their pleasure (and occasional pain). They are aimed at the General Public, schools and anyone who just wants to come along and hear a bit more about what maths is really about.  This page includes forthcoming lectures and events that members of the public can sign up for and also previous lectures, available on a variety of viewing and listening platforms.
