Elementary School

Music in WJUSD Elementary Schools starts in 4th grade. Every 4th grader in WJUSD learns violin from our violin instructor, Jean Davis. 4th grade violin students develop musical skills such as rhythm, the basics of violin technique, music literacy, and other elements that will help them succeed on an instrument in 5th and 6th grade.

Music in 5th and 6th grade is optional. Students can choose to play a band instrument, or they may continue playing violin or learn viola. If students choose a band instrument, they receive instruction from one of four band teachers: Richard Barber, Greg Hales, David Johnson, or Jeremy Smith. Students continuing with violin or viola continue receiving instruction from our string instructor.

The instruments available to 5th and 6th graders are as follows:

flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, french horn, trumpet, cornet, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin and viola.

Instrument availability in each grade level varies by school.
