This section will explain how we addressed Personal Health and Safety using Safe Choices/ School is a Safe Place lesson, emotional intelligence challenges to address self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, and social skills.
Based on Panorama Survey, Memorial Elementary has a need to address school safety. Counselors provide guidance lessons on a daily basis. Our emphasis is on the power to choose. Our students learn their choices determine the kind of day they will have.
In the lesson, we discuss how we stay safe by following rules, making safe choices, and staying away from danger.
The lesson also includes a video about keeping doors locked . The video was created by WISD at Memorial Elementary. For grades 2nd - 5th, students use Ripple Effects Program to emphasize the lesson of the day.
We also include worksheets for students to determine if activities are considered to be safe/ unsafe.
Results of the Lesson: Children were able to determine if their actions were safe or unsafe. They additonally become more aware of how thier choices can keep them safe or put them in dangerous situations. Most importantly, the students learned to keep doors locked at all times and not to open the doors for anyone without adult approval.
We know this lesson was successful because our students learned not to open "outside doors" to anyone. As a result, when our district runs their safety checks, we have passed 99% of the time.
Blessed to work with our Stakeholders
"It takes a village to raise a child." There is no other way to describe the sense of community at Memorial Elementary. Memorial Counselors work diligently to empower students by guiding them in becoming the person they want to become. Memorial's Counseling department continues to promote the development of the whole child and advocates for services and resources needed by students to form healthy relationships, increase love and pride in themselves, and make appropriate choices that will help them succeed in the future. We continue to have an "open door policy" with teachers, parents and community members. Our doors are always open to hear comments and concerns from those we serve. Memorial Elementary Counseling Department is extremely blessed for the partnerships developed throughout the years with all stakeholders.
