Counseling Mission Statement: The mission of Cleckler-Heald Elementary School Counseling Department is to provide a comprehensive PK-5 developmental Counseling Program that will assist all students in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to become effective students, responsible citizens, productive workers, and lifelong learners. The counseling program addresses the academic, career, and personal and social development of all students.
Counseling Vision Statement: The counselor's vision is to assist students to obtain the tools they need to achieve excellence. To maximize their unique potential for success as lifelong learners and make a positive difference in our school and community.
Definition: The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program and the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) are an integral part of the Cleckler-Heald Elementary Counseling Program. The school counselor's primary focus is to facilitate instruction by removing impediments to student learning. The Counselors deliver programs that have an impact on student growth in the academic, career, and social-emotional development. Our counseling program utilizes data to understand student needs. The school counselors provide school guidance counseling lessons, individual and group sessions, and interventions. They work closely with students, parents, and staff, community, and stakeholders to ensure students needs are met.
Rationale: Weslaco ISD Professional School Counselors believe that students deserve equitable access to high-quality education in a safe and accepting environment structured to foster the learning process. They also believe that all students can succeed when positive relationships are present and fostered by all educational stakeholders in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment.
Assumptions: For the Weslaco ISD Comprehensive Counseling Program to be fully and effectively implenented at Cleckler-Heald Elementary, the following certain criteria must be met:
The school counselors must be fully certified by the State Board for Educator Certification and have special training to carry out specialized job assignments.
The school counseling program provides for each of the four delivery system components.
All students, parents, teachers, and other recipients of school counseling program resources have equal access to the program regardless of cultural background, disability, ethnicity, gender, learning ability level, native language, race, socioeconomic status, etc.
Parents are full partners with educators in the education of their children.
The school counseling advisory council meets and evaluates the school counseling program with the assistance of parents and community.
The school counselors make unique contributions to the educational program to promote healthy growth and development of students.
School Administrators understand and support the school counseling program's priorities and demands. Administrators make decisions and establish policies and procedures that reflect this understanding.
School Counselors must have access to students and vice versa, schedules will be developed that allow student accessibility.
Relationships among staff members are characterized by respect, collaboration, and cooperation.
The school counseling budget supports program needs and goals. Funds are utilized to enhance and support the needs of all students.
All facilities must be easily accessible and adequate to allow for implementation of school counseling program.
Program Goals: The Panorama Survey and feedback from the Cleckler-Heald Counseling Advisory Committee (CH CAC), determined student needs. The Panorama online survey is available for all students and staff, and is conducted twice a year. Goals and target skills were determined using data points from Panorama's results. Based on our Survey outcome, the school counselors developed lessons & plans to focus on grit and self management. These 2 areas showed growth throughout the school year.
Needs Assessment: Cleckler-Heald Elementary utilizes the Panorama, a research based survey, along with a school based questionnaire to gather data from students and staff. These quantitative and qualitative surveys are provided to our students and staff twice a year in the Fall and Winter. The results of these surveys assists the counselors with data to meet the needs of the students and campus staff. This Survey allows the counselors to develop an action plan based on the Panorama Survey results.
Graphs below indicate results and sample questions of specific Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills taught to students such as Grit and Self Management.
Program Evaluation: The School counselors continuously re-evaluate program SMART goals to determine whether student and campus needs are being attained. Continued analysis of data, allows the school counselors to determine whether program goals are aligned with campus needs. Re-evaluation data is obtained through the Panorama Student & Staff Survey which are conducted twice a year in the Fall & Spring. The survey results assists the school counselors to evaluate program needs and adjust goals as necessary. Additional data points include attendance, discipline referrals, pre/post surveys from students, parents, and teachers. In addition, Counseling Advisory Committee discussions provide insight into the effectiveness of the interventions and programs implemented. Furthermore, the fidelity of implementation of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program components are reviewed monthly through the SB179 Compliance Log.
