Please complete tasks 1-3 below, then submit your results using the "Submit for Feedback" button at the bottom of the page.
For an overview of the timing of your project: Timeline Checklist
Task 1: Creating an Aim Statement
An Aim Statement is a written, measurable, and time-sensitive description of the accomplishments the team expects to make from its improvement efforts. The Aim Statement answers the question: "What are we trying to accomplish?" (MN Department of Health)
Create an Aim Statement about your project by answering the following questions:
What is the population that will be affected?
Where will the changes occur?
By how much do you aim to change the quality gap?
In what timeframe will this change occur?
Examples:
"In the University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery, we aim to increase vaccination rates by 30% in patients that qualify for the varicella vaccine by June (in 6 month's time) of this year."
"In the Department of Medicine, we aim to decrease wait time for all new patient referrals to <30 days by May (in 5 month's time) of this year."
Task 2A: Goal of Statistics in QI
So far, you only have project baseline data. However, you will need to know how to statistically determine whether your intervention was effective!
The goal of statistics in QI is to show that your intervention improved your previously chosen measure, and subsequently, your health care system's impact on patient care!
To show your intervention improved the care system (and patient care): Compare baseline data and post-intervention data.
You do not need to measure the results of a control vs. test groups
Your results only apply to 1 unique population studied before and after a change was implemented.
Your project is not research, and does not have control or test groups.
You do not need to show statistical significance
Previous research you cited has already proven that your intervention is worthwhile.
If statistical significance is present, it is a benefit.
Task 2B: Statistics In QI - Display Your Data
View Presentation: Display Your Data
Create: two graphs or appropriate display charts of the baseline data you collected earlier in the program.
Excel is an easy program to use to create the graphs or display charts.
Consider creating a few different types of charts to determine how to most clearly express your findings.
Save: the two completed graphs or display charts. You will upload these at the end of this module. This way you will receive feedback about how to appropriately display the data comparing results between your pre and post interventions in the next Module.
You will be asked to upload your charts at the end of the module.
Task 3: Interventions in QI
Selecting an appropriate intervention can be the task that makes your QI project successful. It is important to consider some tips to find a successful strategy.
View Presentation: Developing an Intervention:
Ideas to consider when developing your intervention plan:
Brainstorm multiple ideas before settling on one
Be sure that the intervention addresses the measure that you aim to improve
Ensure the appropriate manpower is present
Consider who the stakeholders might be and engage them early
Develop an appropriate marketing plan so the intervention has momentum and is carried out
Task 4: Submit Your Work
Submit: baseline data charts and intervention plan by clicking the "Submit for Feedback" button below.
If you would like, take a moment to review the feedback rubric that will be used to guide the feedback for your submission.
Note: Submitting the form will notify the QI mentors that you are ready for feedback; once the feedback is generated, it will be delivered to you via email and will include a link to Module IV.
