There are several areas that I highlight with students when I am working with them in an individual or small group setting. The poster I shared (to the left <-------) highlights these areas.
A few other areas I would like parents to know and understand:
I am also a parent, meaning I use this lens during my work
If your child tells me something that I would want to know as a parent in order to help my child navigate through something difficult (and it doesn't fall under the categories listed in the chart); your child and I will discuss the matter and generally we come to the consensus that either I will make a call to you, or the child will speak with you when they get home and inform you about what we discussed.
I use general statements when discussing what your child and I talk about when teachers and other school staff ask. For example: a teacher may ask out of concern, "Why did Billy see you today?" My response would be, "Billy is worried about some things and we started working through them today." It is important to Billy's learning and time in the classroom that the teacher has an understanding that Billy is worried about things. This is probably affecting his learning. The teacher is also the first line of defense when Billy is at school. It is important that they have a general understanding so they can accommodate or check-in as needed with their students.
If your child or another child's safety is at risk and I feel other school staff needs to be aware of these risks I will notify staff of these risks in the most general way possible to still maintain FERPA and the child's confidentiality, while also keeping everyone safe.
