Cluster 1:
Build a Mathematical Community through Real Data
August 27-September 6
August 27-September 6
Objectives Covered:
NC.4.MD.4: Represent and interpret data using whole numbers.
• Collect data by asking a question that yields numerical data.
• Make a representation of data and interpret data in a frequency table, scaled bar graph, and/or line plot.
• Determine whether a survey question will yield categorical or numerical data.
Tips:
-What is the difference between categorical data and numerical data?
-Categorical Data is when the data you collect is in words; so the question you ask would yield "word" answers
Ex. What Harry Potter House are you in? What is your favorite sport? Who is your favorite singer?
-Numerical Data is when the data you collect is in numbers; so the question you ask would yield "number" answers
Ex. How many pets to you have? How old are you? What size shoe do you wear? How many inches tall are you?
-Graphs:
-Can show numerical or categorical data
-Carefully read labels to identify categories vs. data tracked
-Before answering questions it can be helpful to label amounts on top of bars or plots OR to make a frequency table as shown
-Be prepared to answer single and multiple step questions
