EXPLORE AND INTERACT WITH SAMPLE NEW ITEMS TYPES DEVELOPED FOR USE ON FUTURE STAAR EXAMS

House Bill 3906 (86th Texas Legislature, 2019) requires that no more than 75% of any State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) test be presented in a multiple-choice format. This requirement is expected to take effect on all STAAR tests beginning with the Spring 2023 administration.

To meet this requirement, TEA has identified potential new item types for use on STAAR exams and is seeking feedback on these potential new item types. Feedback could include suggestions on how to make the directions for an item type clearer, at which grade levels each item type would be appropriate, any concerns or difficulty you had when interacting with an item type, or other comments you may have. Please submit any feedback you may have using this survey link.

READING LANGUAGE ARTS STAAR SAMPLE ITEMS

Multiple-choice revising and editing items were included as field test items on grades 3–8 STAAR reading tests in Spring 2021. These items were embedded in the assessments but had no accountability measure.

To help educators prepare students for the new writing item types, TEA has provided sample items for each grade. Click the purple button below to find a links to documents that include two complete sets of editing and revising items per grade along with an answer key.

TRANSITIONS TO ONLINE ASSESSMENTS

Through House Bill 3906, the Texas Legislature required TEA to investigate and develop a transition plan to administer all state-required assessments online by the 2022–23 school year.

The transition plan, reported to the legislature in December 2020, is subject to legislative approval prior to implementation. Based on the results of a feasibility study, TEA recommended to the legislature a transition plan that will include training and resources to support districts with implementation.

STAAR online administration benefits include:

  • Faster test scores and results
  • Reduced operational complexity and waste
  • Assessment matches the realities of today’s online learning environment
  • Better test security and improved administration
  • Potential for customizable assessments and new item types
  • More equitable access to accommodations
