Read: The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend, by Dan Santat
Let students know this book won the Caldecott Award in 2015. Explain that the Caldecott Award
is given for best illustration. Tell the students that Dan Santat is the author and illustrator of
Beekle. Review some of the illustrations of the imaginary creatures. Have students draw their
own imaginary creatures and list 3 things they would like to do with them. They can take these home.

February 8th - 14th
Today: February 14th: All classes will learn this Thursday February 16th we will have a special library class with visiting author Alicia Klepeis.
Alicia is a nonfiction author - review with students what nonfiction means.
There are several books by Alicia on my desk with a variety of nonfiction topics, you can show some to the students and read some excerpts, you do not need to read the entire book aloud.
Review the text features of a nonfiction book - Table of Contents, Index, Glossary, Diagrams, Bold words etc.
Review this slideshow with students and discuss how we should behave during the presentation, and think about some good questions we may wish to ask her. Look at her website and show her "about me" section the link is in the slideshow.
Allow students to checkout, and return to their spots and read until everyone is checked out. If time - allow students to share their books if they wish to (they do not have to share). If I'm short on time I usually just have them hold their books up and announce what they have. If you have extra time they can come up and show their book under the document camera.
