Ask students if they ever had (or have) an imaginary friend - call on a few students to answer.

Read: The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend, by Dan Santat

Let students know this book won the Caldecott Award in 2015. Explain that the Caldecott Award

is given for best illustration. Tell the students that Dan Santat is the author and illustrator of

Beekle. Review some of the illustrations of the imaginary creatures. Have students draw their

own imaginary creatures and list 3 things they would like to do with them. They can take these home.

Ask students if they know what the word onomatopoeia means.

Explain: an onomatopoeia word suggests the sound it describes... "bang", "meow" etc.
