12:00 - 12:45 PM: Multiple Pathways to the Same Destination - Stephanie Wasmanski and Lori Cooper
We, as educators, commonly feel pressure to ensure that all students leave our classrooms with the skills and knowledge necessary to move on to the next course in their program or phase of their academic career successfully. Educators are also tasked with motivating students while making the content relevant and engaging without sacrificing quality. Research has shown that high levels of self-regulatory behaviors are positively correlated with student motivation (Sun & Rueda, 2012; Wolters & Benzon, 2013) and that higher levels of student motivation (Bolkan, Goodboy, & Kelsey, 2016; Martin, Galentino, & Townsend, 2014), and self-regulated learning strategies (Stegers-Jager, Cohen-Schotanus, & Themmen, 2012; Wolters & Hussain, 2015) contribute to academic success. What if students were empowered to determine how they are going to meet objectives and hold themselves accountable for the process by completing assessments that demonstrate their new skills and knowledge? How could you shift your focus to give students the ability to choose their own pathway to knowledge in your own classroom?

10:00 - 10:45 AM: Accessibility Basics for Online Course Materials - Rachael Roth
In online course design, accessibility is typically an afterthought. Often, course designers and instructors are scrambling to create accessible course content only after they have received notice from Disability Support Services informing them that an accommodation is needed in their course. Even more often, instructors are not aware of best practices and how to make their online courses accessible. As instructional designers we hope to assist instructors in being proactive rather than reactive in the design and implementation of accessible online curriculum. During this session, I will introduce our everyday strategies for promoting proactive accessible design in our online courses, while also sharing best practices, tips, and tricks for incorporating the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach. The goal of this approach is to not only enhance the students overall learning experience, but minimize the amount of time it takes for students with disabilities to access course content and complete tasks successfully online. By sharing our insight on the UDL approach and accessibility resources, we intend to promote accessibility practice.
