We would love to help you solve a particular challenge or implement a new tool or idea. Please recognize that as the fall semester draws closer, the busier things get. Because we want to provide the best service and support possible, we suggest planning ahead and scheduling an appointment well in advance of the start of the semester.

This presentation is designed to share an innovative approach to preventing student plagiarism in discussions, by having students first submit their work to a "Discussion Post Originality Check." The impetus for implementing this approach as well as outcomes are discussed. During the presentation, the approach will be demonstrated.

10:00 - 10:45 AM: Make Your Discussions Come to Life - Kristine Pruett
Are you frustrated that your students don't do much discussing in your discussion forums? Tired of the inevitable "I agree!" or "Great post."? Then join Kristine to learn specific discussion strategies that can increase students' responses and engage them more deeply with the content. After reviewing a variety of discussion strategies and prompt types, we will work on revising an existing discussion prompt so be sure to bring one that you would like to improve.

11:00 - 11:45 AM: Using Maps to Enhance Learning Experience, part 1 - Bobak Karimi
This workshop will introduce existing resources through the Center for Geographic Information Science (GIS) that can help instructors develop multimedia (paper, digital, and online) maps to aid the classroom experience. A short example of a map with corresponding assignment focusing on the influence of plate tectonics on society, culture, and human development will be provided to motivate instructor creativity in creating their own map-assisted activities. All disciplines welcome.

12:00 - 12:45 PM: Using Maps to Enhance Learning Experience, part 2 - Bobak Karimi
The latter portion of the workshop will be a time for instructors to develop ideas of maps they might want for their courses (with media in mind), and list the datasets they would need with the functionalities they might want developed. The director of the Center for GIS will assist instructors in preparing this content for the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 terms. All disciplines welcome.

An introductory overview on classroom copyright issues emphasizing the differences between F2F and online environments and situations. This session will give learners enough background training to make informed decisions regarding copyright issues. Beyond protecting themselves, educators need to set good examples for their students’ protection as well.

What determines a "good" course? How do you know if you have designed a good online course? Are your students struggling to find things? Have you included key information for them to be successful? 11:00 - 11:45 AM: Lessons Learned from Online Transition Due to COVID 19: Perceptions of Motivation from Undergraduate Students as a Result of Perceived Faculty Engagement - Lori Cooper and Ty Frederickson
Lori Cooper and Ty Frederickson will share the findings from their qualitative case study research on the undergraduate student experience during the transition to online learning during and following COVID-19. Our findings will illuminate students' perceptions of teaching strategies faculty used to effectively support student engagement and learning. This session will be of value to all levels of educators who work either in an online, face-to-face, or hybrid model, as it will provide the unique lessons students have shared regarding effective faculty approaches.

With large classes and little time, tracking attendance can be an issue. Using the Attendance module in D2L helps saves valuable class time in one step. D2L can also send out email reminders to students who have developed attendance issues.

The aim of this session is to help confront and overcome the initial road blocks that get in the way of creating high-quality, reusable content for online courses. Have you never used D2L before? Or maybe only using a few features? This bootcamp will show you how to get started with a blank shell in D2L, and populate your course with content, assignments, discussions, and quizzes to get up and running, and how to supplement your course with video from Panopto. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their course materials to build their course as we go through the bootcamp, and if you're not ready to do that yet, a blank sandbox will be provided for you to play in.
