Transitioning to Kindergarten
We look forward to welcoming our new kindergarten students and families into our school!
Here are a few tips to help your child transition to kindergarten.
Preparing for Kindergarten
Use pictures, stories, and discussions to help familiarize your child with school.
Help your child memorize his/her full name, which will help staff quickly find your child’s teacher and/or classroom when needed.
Reinforce behaviors such as paying attention, sharing, and using kind words.
If possible, arrange opportunities to play with other children, especially children who will be in kindergarten with your child.
Give your child simple chores, such as putting away toys or picking up clothes, to encourage responsibility.
As school approaches, establish a more structured schedule at home to prepare your child for the school year.
The First Few Weeks of Kindergarten
As your child adjusts to kindergarten, try to spend some extra quiet one-on-one time with your child and try to keep the family schedule as simple as possible.
Sometimes, children do have difficulty separating from parents or guardians at drop off. School staff are experienced in helping children cope with these feelings, but we understand that this can be upsetting for families.
Try to remain calm and positive at drop off. Reassure your child that he or she will be okay and you will see them soon.
If your child continues to experience difficulty with separation, please reach out to us so that we can collaborate on strategies to help.
