Below you will find a range of activities for your child to choose from while at home. Your child may do as little or as much as they like. Most of these activities are knowledge-based and your child may have some understanding already so it is a great way for them to maintain their knowledge while away from in-class learning.

What are Heart words? In the Little Learners decodable books, there are a few high-frequency words that children cannot decode yet. We call these ‘Heart words’ because children need to learn them by heart to read them. Many Heart words become decodable later in the program when children have more knowledge of the alphabetic code. A few Heart words will not become decodable – they are irregular or use uncommon phoneme–grapheme correspondences.
Why do we teach Heart words? Heart words are a combination of high-frequency words and interest words that are needed to create a story. At Stages 1 and 2, the Heart words the and I allow children to read and write whole sentences and stories.

ORCA Values
You will need:
1 piece of blank paper
1 pencil
1 set of colouring pencils/markers
This week at school we have been doing some work with our ORCA values. Can you practice the te reo for our ORCA values?
Ownership - Rangatiratanga
Respect - Manaakitanga
Collaborate - Whanaungatanga
Achieve - Ako
On a blank piece of paper draw your own your own, very cool, ORCA. Maybe you could decorate it in WGP school colours? Or try some cool koru pattern designs inside?
On the page around the ORCA write the te reo for each of our values (Rangatiratanga, Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Ako)
How can you show these values at home or school? List as many examples under each one you can think of.
