Below you will find a range of activities for your child to choose from while at home. Your child may do as little or as much as they like. Most of these activities are knowledge-based and your child may have some understanding already so it is a great way for them to maintain their knowledge while away from in-class learning.

This year we are going to be learning our letter names and sounds. Listen to the chitter chatter chant to get to know the characters we will be meeting in our Little Learners Love Literacy programme. This is a great drill to do every day.
Learn to read and write some of the Year 1 & 2 Heart Words
What are Heart words? In the Little Learners decodable books, there are a few high-frequency words that children cannot decode yet. We call these ‘Heart words’ because children need to learn them by heart to read them. Many Heart words become decodable later in the program when children have more knowledge of the alphabetic code. A few Heart words will not become decodable – they are irregular or use uncommon phoneme–grapheme correspondences.
Why do we teach Heart words? Heart words are a combination of high-frequency words and interest words that are needed to create a story. At Stages 1 and 2, the Heart words the and I allow children to read and write whole sentences and stories.

Help your teacher get to know you and what is most important to you. Draw a heart on paper and split it up into different parts as shown in the picture. In each section draw something and label it (if you can hear the sounds in the words) with things that are important to you.
Take a photo and send it to your teacher or bring it to school when we return.
